My Sseko Story
I am inspired by many things. Inspired to read and learn and live and love. I have opened my heart to issues far greater than my own recently and there are a few reasons why. My sister got me involved with a company called Sseko in 2016. While my sister was a big proponent in me learning about this thing called “ethical fashion”, Sseko and the community found therein have absolutely been the sustaining factor. They are the reason that I now shop 95% of my clothing ethically. The women I meet and have relationships with on the outside and the inside of the company have caused me to grow and learn. Sseko is the reason that I have sought out volunteering with an Anti-trafficking organization called “She Has A Name”. And the values of those around me cause me to question every single day if what I am doing is a.) harmful to others b.) helpful to others and c.) what can I do better. That is inspiration!
Sseko Designs is an ethical fashion company based out of Portland, Oregon. The products are all made and sourced using fair trade standards. Every item is sourced locally in East Africa, but handmade in Uganda, Ethiopia, and occasionally by local tribes. Sseko’s mission is to provide dignified employment to women in East Africa and to help send women to University. They employ women graduating from High School who are trying to go to University. In a country where only about 2% of women make it to University, this is a huge gap that needs to be filled.
Sseko takes it up a notch, though. Through our Sole Sister program, we are able to give these University bound women a bonus scholarship to attend University. They will save at least 50% of their income while employed with Sseko and at the end of their work period, 9 months, they will receive at least 200% match on their savings. It is a wonderful plan for these brilliant and hardworking women. We also employ full-time employees too!
Want to get involved with Sseko?
Sseko is a unique brand with an even more unique story. We love to share that story all around the United States and even further! I share the story in many ways with the primary way being through people like you. I do in-home and online “events” where I can share the Sseko story with those that are close to you. In turn, your friends and family get to empower women through their purchases of handmade bags, jewelry, clothing, and sandals. As a hostess, you get plenty of rewards too:). Please email me about interest in joining me in sharing about Sseko within your community.
